Hypervisor Management Overview

A hypervisor is software that arbitrates and controls virtual machine access to the underlying physical hardware. The Hypervisors page allows you to enable the creation of instances on an infrastructure resource through the assignment of tags. OpenStack can place and manage workloads on a variety of environments. For Stratus Cloud Workload Services, these environments are hardware nodes running hypervisors. This includes ESX Servers (VMware nodes), KVM nodes, Xen nodes, and HyperV nodes.

To add nodes to the list of hypervisors to be managed, the IT administrator makes OpenStack aware that the nodes exist by editing a file in the OpenStack environment. This lists the new nodes in the Discovered section of the Hypervisor page under Show Discovered. The IT administrator knows that there are items in the discovered section due to the number indicator on the Hypervisor page in the menu and on the Discovered Label on the page itself.

Note: Hypervisors cannot be deleted; they can only be marked as Unmanaged.
Note: If a KVM-FT hypervisor is hosting instances, the KVM-FT tag cannot be removed.

Should a hypervisor fail, failover recovery mode actions are executed as defined in the image assigned to the package.
